Taking Up Space

Taking Up Space

An exhibition of WCACO women artists working in large format. Our title is an homage celebrating women creating and owning their space, taking up residence and becoming a force in their communities. Women expand their influence by becoming their most authentic selves. This year's jurors are Autumn T Thomas and Genevieve Waller. Autumn is an interdisciplinary wood sculpture artist. Her work challenges the boundaries of visual literacy: hundreds of cuts placed into the wood transforms it into soft, twisting forms, mimicking the endurance required to thrive amidst the oppression and marginalization of women of color. Genevieve is an artist and curator from Wichita, Kansas who creates photograms, sculptures, and installations that deal with excess, substitution, transparency, and the status of everyday objects. She is the founder and editor of the art journal DARIA: Denver Art Review, Inquiry, and Analysis.

A solo show by Ashton Lacy Jones, Encaustic Artist

Show Statement: The creative process for me is primal and instinctive.  I am process driven; I want to see how far I can push a medium, to see if I can make the wild idea in my imagination come to fruition.  Art speak and theory hold little sway with me, I would rather talk to you about how I make my art and the tools I used.   For me, the creation of art is very much a call and response process – the art itself, a mark, line, a color calls to me and I respond.
